Power vs Force /October 11, 2013
Earlier this week Bill was showing me how to do squats...well I think that's what they are called! He told me to push my feet down into the ground to push myself up. Obvious, I know but the effect was extraordinary. I realised that normally I lift myself with my upper body rather than push into the ground with my legs. It was a completely different experience and so much easier. At the ripe old age of 52 I had discovered an unknown source of power in my body. Boy, I wish this thing had come with a manual!
So, this week I have been having fun walking up stairs. Fortunately my house is on five floors so I have lots of chances to play. I realise that I normally pull myself upstairs rather than push into the stairs. By pushing into the stairs I can use my legs as levers which reminds me of the famous Archimedes quotation,
"Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it and I shall move the world."
In a dream last week I was shown a paradigm shift. It was very clear at the time and I woke up thinking, "That was a paradigm shift." Of course when I woke up the next morning I couldn't remember anything other that those words and the fact that it had seemed rather tricky. If you can imagine taking a balloon, untying the knot, letting out all the air, turning it inside out and blowing it up again before retying the knot you can get an idea of what is involved.....oh and you are the balloon!
It gave me a sense of the magnitude of a paradigm shift. Everything changes. The inside becomes the outside and the outside becomes the inside. Rather like discovering the power of pushing into the ground to ascend.
I also have the strong sense that I have been making life a lot more difficult that it needs to be. Rather than using all my strength to haul myself upstairs a simple redirection of energy allows me to use gravity, levers and all that other physics stuff I have never understood to get to the top with ease. I don't have to do it all myself. I just have to be prepared to do it all differently!

Enjoy the absence....
I can't recall the crime, but I certainly remember the punishment!
"Don't ever do that again Ayling and write me a ten side essay with the title, "The Inside of a Table Tennis Ball."
Mr. Archer had all of the characteristics of a PE teacher: poor sense of justice, low originality and a tired sense of humour.
I can't remember what I wrote about in that essay, but it can't be too different to my experience at the moment.
The challenge I am facing is how to communicate the absence of something?
The ping pong ball is defined by space. The space within it and the space which it occupies. Our attention cannot help but fall on the ping pong ball as the reality, but struggles to comprehend the nature of the space.
Similarly, we become convinced that our story is the reality and fail to give our attention to the space which holds the story.
In those moments in which our attention moves from the story we can access something remarkable. Those moments are becoming more accessible and are worthy of your attention.
Enjoy the absence!
